Navigating Facebook’s Privacy Settings

With Facebook changing its appearance, functions and security settings almost as often as the seasons change, it is important to stay up-to-date on how to keep your privacy settings intact.

According to an article on Yahoo! News, there are several precautions you can take to make sure the right people see the right things. We’ve highlighted a few, below:

  • Categorize your friends by how close they are to you. Naming friends as “Acquaintances” allows you to prevent these contacts from seeing more personal updates. Those personal posts can be kept personal by selecting the “Friends Excluding Acquaintances” option in the “audience selector.”
  • “Who can see my stuff?” In this section, it is a good idea to select “Friends” as opposed to “Public.” Something we found interesting about this is that “Life Events” will automatically be public events unless you specify otherwise. This includes relationship status changes, graduations, etc. If you would like to keep these to a limited audience, be sure to edit that upon posting.
  • “Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline?” Unless you would like to be able to be found professionally  via web search engines on Facebook, this option should be off. Stick to LinkedIn or public Facebook pages for these purposes.
